• -Decide on a budget. Websites can vary greatly in price from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand and on up. This is a broad range but for the typical business you can feel safe by budgeting approximately $300-$1000.
• -Surf the web. The best way to decide how you would like your site to look is to find websites you like as well as those you don't. Find a couple examples of each and write down the things you like and dislike. This will help us to work in the right direction.
• -Choose a domain name. Today it is harder and harder to find basic domain names so you will sometimes need to play around with combinations of words. Keep in mind that when most people think of a website they think .com. So don't necessarilly jump at a .net or .tv just because your business name is available. You may send your customers straight into the arms of your competitor's shopping cart.
• -Find a host. There are about as many hosting companies as there are McDonalds so finding one is easy, but finding one that offers what you need for the price you want can be tricky. There are lots of hosts that nickel and dime you or charge outrageous amounts for not a lot of substance. Be sure you are getting your money's worth.
• -Pick your pages. What would you like your site to offer? Are you selling products? Each product will need a description page as well as a shopping cart. Do you want to include a blog to tell your customers about specials and new products? Try to take an inventory of everything you want to accomplish on your website. This will help any web designer give you a more accurate quote.
• -Do some research. If you have a little bit of html knowledge or are willing to learn this can greatly reduce the cost of building and maintaining your website. Graphic designers charge anywhere from $40 per hour and on up. Every time you need to change the price of an item or you notice something needs to be re-worded you will get a bill for it. If you can do that little bit of coding you will save A LOT! If you have more than a little knowledge and can work with a style sheet or think you can learn that can really save you MONEY.
